Art & Environment will be available as an online-only teacher professional development course during the summer of 2015. With 12 years of experience teaching Eco Art directly to high school students, the Wexner Center’s Director of Education Shelly Casto has extensive materials and resources to share with teachers around the world. Designed primarily for K-12 art teachers, this course will provide an in-depth introduction to the emerging field of Eco Art as well as a basic introduction to environmentalism. Along with K-12 art teachers, K-5 general classroom teachers, 6-12 humanities and 6-12 science teachers will also find the course of interest if they would like to explore interdisciplinary connections.
Following an exploration of the course content, teachers will choose an environmental topic and artist of interest whose work they will research in depth. Teachers will create a lesson plan for their students around this topic and they will explore field trip opportunities in their community. Teachers will be asked to share their lesson plans with fellow students in the course. An extensive packet of curriculum resources will be distributed to teachers upon completion.
Course assignments and experiences will include:
- a brief exam on basic environmentalism
- reading articles online as well as Worldchanging: a User’s Guide for the 21st Century
- reading and responding to Margaret Atwood’s novel Year of the Flood
- live Google Hangout sessions with 2 or 3 Eco Artists
- focused research on a field of specialty within the broader scope of environmentalism and Eco Arts resulting in an online “idea portfolio”
- research on community field trip opportunities and local artists who could be involved in delivering a classroom session
- final 4-5 hour curriculum outline to be shared with other students in the course
Teachers should plan to commit 15 hours per week for the 4 week course. Those 4 weeks will actually be spread out over 8 weeks to allow teachers to plan time away from their computer during the summer and participate at their own pace. Dates will be June – Aug , 2015.
Teachers will receive a certificate of course completion for CEU credit as well as a documented badge on Credly. Course registration fee: $75. Teachers must be prepared to purchase two books for the course, rent 3 or 4 videos to be streamed online and have access to a computer with a video cam (embedded or peripheral).
A Note on Technology
This course relies entirely on technology for its content and for interaction with fellow students and the instructor. Teachers are advised to have an up-to-date computer system and access to reliable internet service. Teachers should avoid trying to access the course through school system networks as K-12 filters may block some content and functionality. Teachers will receive guidance on accessing the Haiku online learning system and Google Hangout platforms, but a basic comfort level with learning new technology is suggested. The Haiku system has wonderful help desk staff. The instructor is not an IT or computer specialist, but will assist in any way that is feasible.
